\u201cOwnership, control and investment in South Africa \u2013 23 years on\u201d<\/strong><\/p>

The investments and decisions of large firms shape how countries develop. In the recent debates on radical economic transformation, there has been little engagement with the market behaviour of large, internationalised conglomerate groups and companies. Recent CCRED research shows that the largest firms in the economy have not been investing extensively in expanding domestic production capabilities. In addition, there has been limited change in the composition of the top 50 firms on the JSE since 2000, more so in terms of the significant influence of major conglomerate groups and a clear absence of black-owned entrants.

CCRED presents the findings of the Industrial Development Research Project which considers the strategies and investment decision making of the largest firms listed on the JSE. In this platform, we consider key questions relevant to the next steps in South Africa\u2019s economic growth path; including: What economic and political factors underpin the trends observed? What can be done to change the pattern of low investment and how should government and business engage? Why does it matter and what should be the terms of a new deal to foster productive investment by large business groups, and broaden the base of ownership?
