Research Themes - The Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development

RESEARCH THEMES

CCRED’s research explores various themes in three primary pillars and the intersections between these. These are competition and barriers to entry; inclusive regional value chains; and industrial development and structural transformation and inclusion in South Africa and the continent.

Additionally, our research examines cross-cutting themes, including climate change, digitalisation and the digital economy, which are embedded within these pillars.

Competition + Barriers to Entry

Barriers to Entry create and reinforce the market power of large and lead firms, leading to higher prices, lower levels of innovation, and a less competitive and inclusive economy.

This theme explores the landscape of market competition, structures, regulatory frameworks, and strategic considerations to uncover the obstacles faced by new entrants that are shaping competitive environments today.

Global + Regional Value Chains

Technological and organisational changes have facilitated the organisation of economic activity across multiple firms in geographically dispersed locations worldwide, in what is termed global value chains.

This theme unravels the patterns of value creation and capture by exploring the linkages and power relationships governing multiple stakeholders and the interconnectedness of production, distribution, and consumption across global and regional value chains.

Local Industrial Development + Inclusive Growth

The South African economy faces robust structural imbalances and weak linkages across its industrial ecosystem and manufacturing base. This theme focuses on fostering sustainable and equitably distributed economic development through inclusive strategies, interventions, and policies to build a thriving industrial landscape.
